25 sailors of Indian Navy test positive for Corona virus at INS Angre, a support establishment under the Western Command in Mumbai. The Navy has made it clear that no officer or sailor serving on board any warship or submarine has been infected.
Navy sources on Saturday said that most of the infected Navy personnel are asymptomatic and have been traced to a single sailor who tested positive on April 7. All sailors are reported to be in their 20s except for one who is 47 years old and is the oldest of the lot.
INS Angre is a shore-based depot that provides logistical and administrative support to naval operations of the Western Naval Command. The Navy is looking into the possibility of the men having moved around within the Navy facilities for essential duties even though the city is otherwise under lockdown.
Those who have tested positive for COVID-19, are now in quarantine in INHS Ashwini, a naval hospital in Mumbai’s Colaba. The entire block has been put under quarantine and classified as a containment zone.
INS Angre is also known as the Naval Barracks and provides various facilities to all ships and units based at Mumbai. INS Angre is like a mothership which controls and oversees the functioning of a wide array of diverse units and facilities.
